Pirate or Marine

Are you a Christian Pirate or a Christian Marine?

Anyone that has ever gone on a mission trip with me realizes that I operate the trip with the understanding that everyone is either a pirate or marine.  If you are a pirate I treat you like one and you live by the code of the pirates: "he who falls behind gets left behind".  (I learned that from Captain Jack Sparrow.)  Then there are Marines.  People who have shown they are valuable to the team and have proven themselves to be servants of the team and therefore have earned the right to be treated like a marine.  The marine code is: "leave no man behind".  (I learned that from Blackhawk Down – a great movie, btw).  The code of the pirates and code of the marines have brought about a lot of fun on our missions trips.  Trying to earn the Marine distinction has compelled people to do a lot of hard work as well.  And yes, there has even been a little controversy when people feel their efforts were not recognized enough to promote them in comparison to other people.  But, it is what it is...

At any rate, all of this has led me to ask the question: Are you a Pirate or Marine?

Many Christians think they are marines but in fact they act like pirates.  They have been freed from the bondage of sin and that's all that matters.  They have the attitude that, "I'm free, so other people can take care of their own self".  We have to understand that our freedom from sin is not a result of something we did to attain it but something Christ did for us.  Don't disregard the grace of God and the kindness that He showed to lead to your freedom.  Don't go about celebrating in such a way that you forsake your responsibility to the others still in bondage.  Once you are free, remember you have a mission, the Great Commission.

When Christ sets us free we should make it our lives goal to see as many other people as we can – as a matter of fact, everyone we know – attain the same freedom!

What if you were out hiking with a few friends and you all fell into a hole in the ground.  You are all screaming and calling out for help, then along comes a stranger and pulls you out of the hole.  Once you were freed from the hole and back on the path, would you run off celebrating, leaving your friends trapped back in the hole?  Of course not!  You would be happy that you were freed, but you would stick around and help your friends out, not resting until each of them were back on the path, free from the pit of despair.

The same is true with God.  You have to understand that God wants you involved with His bidness of reconciling others to Him!

So we are Christ's ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We

speak for Christ when we plead, "Come back to God!" - 2 Corinthians 5:20

All followers of Christ who have been set free are called to represent Him.  We are free to act like Him and carry His message of reconciliation to Him.  Christ is making His appeal to others through us.  His mandate is to leave no man behind!

Are you living by that standard?  Or are you too preoccupied with enjoying your freedom – living it up and enjoying the party of life?  Are you a Christian Pirate who realizes that others are still in bondage but are too busy with your own life and living by the decree; "he who falls behind gets left behind"?

God help us!

How to have the Hand of God on your Life

People want to know the answer to this question all the time, or at least in one of its forms:  How can I be sure God is with me?  How can I be blessed of God?  How do I feel God?

Have you ever asked any of these questions?

God longs to spend time with you and be a part of your life, in fact, He wants to be your whole life!  He desires to live with you and walk with you and talk with you and spend every waking moment with you.  Closer than any friend, more faithful than any pet, and he will love you more than any mom or grandma ever could.  It's true!

So, how do you have the blessings in the hand of God on your life?

  1. Know the Word of God.  There is so much wisdom in the Word of God that will teach you how to think.  He is not keeping secrets from you and He wants you to know Him more and more each day.  He longs to reveal Himself to those He loves.  Many people are waiting for some divine revelation from a dream or vision.  While I believe God still does speak to people that way, I would say His primary way to reveal Himself to people is in His Word - The Bible.  Why would He tell you His unrevealed will for your life when you don't care about His revealed will?  Not enough to consistantly read the Bible anyway!
  2. Be obedient to His revealed will for you life.  It's not enough to know what the Bible says, you have to control your sin nature enough to be obedient and do what the Word says.  Do His will be obeying His Word!  And the cool thing is, He knows you can't fully obey His Word on your own, so He is willing to take control of your life and then bless you.  Your job is to simply yield control and then obey.  It's like He gives you the answers to the questions on the test.  How cool is that?!  Don't make yielding control bigger than it has to be.  Just accept His help!
  3. Seek the Help of God.  He says in His Word in Ephesians 1:19-20 says: "And you will know that God's power is very great for us who believe. That power is the same as the great strength20 God used to raise Christ from the dead and put him at his right side in the heavenly world."  So, He will give you the power it takes to live an obedient life.  You have to pray and fast and ask Him for the power He gives, which is known as the Holy Spirit.
  4. Have a sensitivity to the Holy Spirit.  By sensitivity, I mean, you have to yield to His authority.  Let the Holy Spirit lead and guide your actions.  Let Him call the shots and run the show.  The Holy Spirit will help you understand, remember and then live out Gods Word in your life.  The Holy Spirit develops a zeal for God and the things He wants for your life.  The Holy Spirit helps you live an obeident and Holy Life.

God blesses obedience and Holiness.  Deuteronomy 30:9-10 " The Lord your God will make you successful in everything you do. (Family, work, home)  But you must obey the Lord your God by keeping all his commands and rules that are written in this Book of the Teachings (The Bible). You must return to the Lord your God with your whole being."

That's pretty cool, huh?!

God is in the Details

Have you ever heard this statement?  "God is in the details".  While in college, I heard this statement often and when I started my foray into the business world it was drilled in my head.  Simply put, it means that details are important.  Whatever you do should be done thoroughly.  I have learned the truth of this statement in my life.

I was reading in the 1st chapter of 2 Samuel and came upon a sad story.  It's the story of the death of King Saul, the first king of Israel.  The last chapter of 1 Samuel ends with what would be a modern day season ending cliff hanger.  Saul and his sons, including Jonathan, were killed during a battle with the Philistines.  A young man is now in the presence of King David and he is recounting the story of how Saul died.  The young man, of Amalekite origin, tells the story of how he personally ended up finishing Saul off after The King had been wounded in battle.  He is now bringing the crown to King David and hoping for some sort of reward.  When you go on to read the story, you see that not only does David NOT give him a reward, but he ends up killing the Amalekite, punishing him because he was not afraid to kill the Lord's appointed king.  Woah!

That's a good point and definitely worth writing about – we should not be quick to raise our hands against leadership that the Lord has appointed, even if that leadership is corrupt.  But that's not the main point of this devotion.

What I find interesting about this story is a smaller little detail.  The young man who brought the news to King David was an Amalekite.  He was of the origin of the people that God originally told Saul to completely destroy when he first anointed him as King.  You have to go back to 1 Samuel 15:3 to see what God originally commanded Saul to do:

"Now go, attack the Amalekites and destroy everything they own as an offering to the Lord. Don't let anything live. Put to death men and women, children and small babies, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys."

Woah!  Kill everything?!  I can understand killing the fighting men, that's just a part of war.  But come on God - the woman, children and small babies?!  That's a little too cruel!  And furthermore, why do they need to kill the animals?  These animals could be used as food.  C'mon God, I just don't know about that!

Many of us would do what Saul did and partially obey.  We would take it upon ourselves to show mercy and leave some things alive – women, children, cattle, and certainly babies.  We would be confident that we know best and that our actions would be justified.  Right?  That's what Saul thought too.  And it turns out that years down the road, one of the children, perhaps one of the babies that he thought it was too cruel to kill; grew up.  As fate would have it, when Saul disobeyed God and let some of the Amalekites live, one of those young men ended up taking a sword in his hand and killing Saul.  The very same people he was supposed to destroy destroyed him.  On the day of reckoning with God, I wonder how Saul tried to explain his disobedience then.

And so it is with us…  In your life, what has God told you to completely destroy?  Do you need to get rid of a pornography addiction, your partying lifestyle, or your tendency to be dishonest and cheat?  We know these things are blatantly wrong.  So, we may try to slow down a little or not do them as much, but these old habits are hard to get rid of.  So we have a tendency to allow them to stick around.  Then there are the seemingly harmless things that we know we need to get rid of.  Likened to the children and little babies that God told King Saul to destroy?  Are there things in your life that you don't see as being bad, but with a little examination you could see why God is telling you to rid your life of them?  Things like that time consuming television habit, a distracting relationship, the job that takes up way too much of your time – so much so that you don't spend time with God or faithfully attend church?

I mean, there is a reason that God doesn't want these things in your life.  He doesn't want anything taking your attention away from Him and the plan He has for your life!  He's not trying to be harsh and stop you from having fun, it's just that He has specific plans for you and He doesn't want anything to come back later and hinder you.  God is in the details!   You just have to trust this and fully obey Him.

Promises from the Lord
Today I was reading in the book of Joshua. My 4th son is named Joshua so I did a little research to find out what the name means. Joshua means "the Lord saves" or "the Lord gives victory". That's sweet!! I prayed that blessing over my son Joshua, then realized that I didnt' have to stop there. We can all pray that prayer of blessing over our own lives. The Lord truly does save and bring victory to His people. It's a promise He gave to His people - Israel, and it still applies to His people today.

Check out Joshua 1:5-9:
5 No one will be able to defeat you all your life. Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you or forget you. 6 "Joshua, be strong and brave! You must lead these people so they can take the land that I promised their fathers I would give them. 7 Be strong and brave. Be sure to obey all the teachings my servant Moses gave you. If you follow them exactly, you will be successful in everything you do. 8 Always remember what is written in the Book of the Teachings. Study it day and night to be sure to obey everything that is written there. If you do this, you will be wise and successful in everything. 9 Remember that I commanded you to be strong and brave. Don't be afraid, because the Lord your God will be with you everywhere you go."

That's good stuff. I realize that all of the word of God is good and true and applies to our lives, but I highlighted a few phrases that stood out to me. If you were to read just the highlighted sections, here is what it would say to us today:
"Be strong and brave! I say it again, be strong and brave. Be sure to obey all my teachings. (The Bible) If you follow
them exactly, you will be successful in everything you do. Study it (The Bible) day and night to be sure to obey
everything! Again, if you do this, you will be wise and successful in everything. So, for the 3rd time, I say, be strong
and brave. The Lord your God will be with you everywhere you go!"

WOW!!

That's a promise you can depend on. God will do what He says He will do. You can take it to the bank that He is going to do His part.

The question is: are you going to do your part? Will you be strong and brave and obey His cammands EXACTLY? Or are you going to continue to follow the crowd and give into the desires of your flesh? Your reply will determine whether or not you are successful in everything you do!

Can you dig it!?!?

All or Nothing
Early in our marriage, Ang and I had the unfortunate experience of sharing an apartment with hundreds of unwanted guests. They were small and tried to stay out of our view and mainly came out at night. Eventually, as their numbers grew they became bolder and would venture into places that were absolutely off limits – the kitchen, oven, bathtub, etc. They liked the living arrangement but since Ang squealed every time she saw one of them we were determined to rid our tiny apartment of any and all of them – ROACHES!

At first we tried setting traps and spraying over the counter roach killer and found that we got rid of a lot of them, if not most of them. But, some of them stayed around and laid more roach eggs and the numbers kept growing. Our goal was not to get rid of some or most of the roaches, but all of them! We wanted to completely destroy all the roach eggs and drive them completely out of our apartment. That was the goal. All of them had to go! If we were satisfied with getting rid of most of them, there would always be the danger of the ones we allowed to stay to lay more eggs and infest our apartment again. If we did completely get rid of all the roaches, they would forever be a nuisance to us and cause trouble in our home since Ang doesn’t remotely like them.

This reminds me of the situation with the Israelites and the inhabitants of the land God promised them. In Numbers 33:55, God tells his people; “If you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land, those you allow to remain will become barbs in your eyes and thorns in your sides. They will give you trouble in the land where you will live.” Our roach infestation completely helps me understand this scripture.

What about you? What is it that God is telling you to completely drive out of your life so that you can live the victorious Christian life that He wants you to live? Since you have become a Christian, are you hanging on to a small tiny thread of the life you used to live? Are you allowing the roaches of music, foul language, bad attitude, inappropriate relationship, lying, etc. to stay around in your life? What’s stopping you from enjoying the good land that God has promised? He tells us to completely destroy anything in our life that could cause a problem for us in the future. This would include anything that could cause you to compromise or take your eyes off of Him. Completely get rid of it before it causes trouble for you.

Our goal was not to get rid of most of the roaches; our goal was to be roach free! The same is true with our Christian life – it’s either all or nothing.

Rev 3:16 "Because you are lukewarm, neither hot or cold, I will spit you out".

Can you dig it?

He guides me down paths of righteousness for His name's sake
Last night, in The House, I talked about the phrase out of the 23rd Psalms: “He guides me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake”. I broke this phrase down into 3 parts:

1. He guides me – our Good Shepherd guides us in ways that cause us to be secure and prosperous. He has a pre-determined plan for your life and He wants to guide you. We don’t guide ourselves
2. Down the path of righteousness – when we allow the Good Shepherd to lead, you can be sure that you will be on the right path. When you try to lead, not so much! Often times we are not on the right path because we are too busy trying to lead instead of letting the Good Shepherd do His job. God is not willing to share leadership with you, so step aside.
3. For His name’s sake – we must remember that we represent Him and His cause for our life.

A Good Shepherd knows that in order for His flock to stay healthy they have to stay on the move. We are going to move, either on our own or carefully in the flock of and at the speed of the Good Shepherd.

Once we realize this and make our decision to allow Him to lead, we just have to learn how to get out of His way. We must put our own desires aside and trust Him to lead us where and how He thinks is best. This is easier said than done. But, it is expected nevertheless. You have to learn to be a follower of Chirst, not just by name only.

This process is called DISCIPLESHIP. Many have asked me if I had a few books that I would recommend to help us learn to become better Disciples of Christ and so I thought I would share this with everyone. Here are 3 books that I would recommend:

1. The Cost of Discipleship by Dietrich Bonhoeffer
2. The Life You’ve Always Wanted by John Ortberg
3. Spiritual Leadership by J. Oswald Sanders
4. Celebration of Discipline by Richard Foster

Make it happen!

Who is Right?
Tell me what you think about this story…A man has a family farm and wants his sons to work for him. He tells his first son to go and work in the field but that son says “No thanks, Dad…I don’t want to be a farmer. I want to make more money and have a more prestigious position”. However, he later changes his mind and goes to work the fields for his father. Meanwhile, the father asks the other son to work in the fields and he immediately replies: “Yes sir, I’ll do whatever you ask”! However, after saying these words, he decides to go and do his own thing. He never worked in the fields at all.

Question: Who obeyed the father?

This is the question Jesus posed to the religious leaders (today we are talking about lifelong Christians). They felt they knew the correct answer and probably thought highly of themselves for being just like the “good” son. They answered: “the first son obeyed the father”. The probably were expecting Jesus to commend them for their insight.

Not so. At this point Jesus threw them a curve: “Even pimps, prostitutes and murderers are going to make it into heaven before some of you so called Christians”. He then went on to say that they were shown the right way to live but didn’t believe it.

Now, you might be thinking to yourself “Oh, I believe in the right way to live”. But are you sure you aren’t missing something (like those religious people in Jesus’ day)? Belief is not something you say…belief is something you DO! You show your belief to God by OBEYING His Word. And the only way you can obey His Word is by reading it, studying it, making sure you understand what it says and how it applies to your life. Figuring out exactly what God expects from you and then doing it!

So, let me ask the question: Do you BELIEVE the right way to live? Or, like those religious leaders from long ago, do you, even after seeing, still refuse to change your ways? God help us to show our belief.

Matthew 21:28-32
